Bienvenida! This blog will follow my year in Colombia.
Many people have asked me why I chose to come to Colombia. There are several reasons, the first of which is that there are a lot of opportunities here for foreigners. Secondly, I have several friends who have lived in Colombia who had told me about their wonderful experiences and all about what the country has to offer.
I think when people ask “why Colombia?”, they’re also inquiring about the safety and security of the country. The perception that Colombia is full of drug lords and guerrilla fighters is prevalent in the U.S. But just like any stereotype, this isn’t a fully accurate portrayal. In fact, the country has changed quite a bit in the last decade The conflict that plagued the country in the 80’s and 90’s has waned more recently. In particular, the place where I’m living – Armenia, the capital city of the department of Quindio – has been untouched by much of the violence.
The Colombians I’ve met so far are very eager to invite more foreigners to come fall in love with the country. I can tell you so far, there is a lot to love. I think my Colombian friends here would be thrilled to know that I am writing this blog and relaying all my good experiences to friends and family back home. I hope you enjoy!
